With Recent Flash upgrade to version 10.2, I faced a a strange issue with regarding to playing videos on youtube. all video I played on main site or yourtube video embedded in other sites like facebook were in red color, while the audio was playing just fine. something like in screenshot below:

Youtube showing red color video due to Flash

It turns out that this is a bug in Adobe Flash Player 10.2 introduced because adobe enabled hardware acceleration to for all users, but in case hw accel does not work properly. video will appear in weird colors. while adbobe is working on the bugfix, the current workaround is to disable Hardware acceleration.

WorkAround:

Goto http://www.youtube.com/swf_test.html

Click on Settings & Uncheck/Clear “Enable Hardware Acceleration”

Disable hardware acceleration

Close all tabs & Restart your Browser.

Everything should be fixed now, if not; then you will have to downgrade to previous version of browser.

Almost everyone in today’s world knows how to use internet. How to open their favourite website? Be it Google, FaceBook or YouTube. But there are only few people (webmasters), who actually know how the internet works? Have you ever wondered, how the website works, what to do if you want to host your website?

So, today’s article helps you understand basics of web hosting. The first word which we come across as soon as we think of website is “hosting”.

Basically there are three kinds of hosting:-

Shared hosting

VPS

Dedicated Hosting

Shared:

As name suggest in shared hosting, large number of sites are hosted on a single server (generally with low traffic), thus sharing all the server resources. For example on server 1 we can host multiple sites, site1,site2,sites3 and so on.

Basic features:

i) Shared Resources(RAM, Diskspace and CPU)

ii) cheap , service starts as low as $4USD/mo

Disadvantages:

i) If the load on particular site increase, other sites hosted on the same server will suffer ; for example a college website, on the day of announcement of results, traffic will suddenly increase; eating all the resources(CPU,RAM,Disk) available on the server. As a result other websites on that server would run slow with high latency.

ii) No Control over server configuration; hence we can’t install or change software ouselves.

Dedicated:

It’s a physical server with real hardware. Basically for websites which have to handle high number of visitors.

Basic features:

i) The client allotted an individual server with all the resources.

ii) Full control over server.

Disadvantages

i) It’s not cost effective as most of the server resources end up unused.

ii) Since costs are high, not everybody can afford it

Advantages

i) Client’s website is unaffected by any other random website

ii) No sharing of resources. Client has full rights over the server.

Virtual Private Server (VPS):

Based on the advancement in virtualization technology, VPS have been developed to provide the perfect ground between shared & dedicated servers. In layman terms, in a VPS a powerful dedicated server is divided in terms of resources (RAM, CPU, Disk) into small mini-servers which are called Virtual Machines. In Virtualization terms, virtual machines are referred as “guest” who has their OS with full control and base machine is called as “Host”.

Advantages:

i) Cost effective, Inmotion has vps web hosting plans starting $39.90USD with free Cpanel. Anyone looking for VPS should give them a try

ii) Burstable Memory: VPS provides burstable memory, which is extra memory apart from your guaranteed quote.

iii) Scalability: you can start small (1 small site) and further grow too many sites handling huge visitors without changing/upgrading machines. As long as host has resources

Suitable For:

i) sites with large databases, E-commerce sites like EBay etc.

ii) Sites with high traffic, but not high enough for a dedicated server.

Ever want to move a your website from one server to another but facing difficulty due to large size of data? Read on..

Recently, I faced a situation whiling moving fairly large image sharing website from shared hosting to a dedicated as it was taking too much resources. there were few challenges in this site transfer:

Number of images were over 90,000 and size of about 95GB which rules of conventional method of first downloading everything from old server on your own machine and then uploading to new server is not feasible.

Shared hosting provider only gave FTP access. so it rules out rsync, scp, bittorrent or anything similar based transfers. host even refused to achieve the 90,000 files.

In short, you will have to move all files and database via FTP. Here is how:

Get the Database Dump:

Download SQLBuddy, extract it & upload it to your old server via FTP. Download Link

Now open webbroswer, Now goto the localisation where you extracted it. For example, location for me was http://gaurishsharma.com/sqlbuddy(this is no longer accessible). yours might be similar.

Login with your username and password.Click on Export and follow on screen instruction. now a database dump file *.SQL will be create in ../sqlbuddy/exports/export.sql. Which you can use to restore database.

Moving All Files

Login to your new server via shell account.

For transfer we will use wget – which is available on all linux based servers. we will use the following command

wget -r -c -nH -l0 ftp://USERNAME:PASSWORD@ftp.domain.com/ --append-output=websitedownload-wget.log -b

Where:

USERNAME: username of old server
PASSWORD: actual password of old server
ftp.domain.com: is the URL or IP address of your old FTP server

Now, after you run its command. you get a output like this

Continuing in background, pid 16554.

-jailshell-3.2$

This means that wget is now downloading all the files from your old server in background, so you can go for sleep and check back. to check the process you can read logfile websitedownload-wget.log

Explanation of Options

-r flag: recursively download all files and directories.
-c flag: not re-download everything that’s already been downloaded (and continue everything that’s been half done).
-nH flag: to make wget not create a directory with the name of the host prior to fetching the files.
-l0 flag: to make sure wget goes down every directory and downloads. By default, wget only goes down 4 directories.
–append-output: it will save the entire download output to file, so you can read it later.
-b flag: it will run wget into background so you can close the terminal and the transfer will still be running.

I Personally tried this method and it works great! The biggest advantage of wget method is that incase transfer gets interrupted or the server goes down, can you can ‘resume’ from where you left.

Hope this help you when you are moving large websites

Its possible to use Facebook chat without open Facebook website, by using a standalone facebook chat application.

Ever wanted to use Facebook chat without logging into Facebook website? Looking are a Desktop application for Facebook chat? Do you hate Facebook chat because it makes your browser go crazy ? If answer is “Yes” then Read On…

Recently, Facebook has enabled support for XMPP/Jabber protocol which means that now you can using standalone Instant Messengers like Pidgin(Works on Windows,Mac & Linux),iChat(Mac only). This works on Windows,Linux and Mac on any application that support jabber protocol.

here I would demonstrate to do this on Windows with pidgin.

Step 1) Set your Facebook username by going here. if your profile url is facebook.com/xxxxx then xxxxx will be your username. please remember it, we will need in later steps.

Step 2) Download & install Pidgin: Pidgin is Open Source IM App which can be freely downloaded from Pidgin.im. Please visit the site and download & Install. Installation is pretty straightforward – typical windows style. Just keep Clicking Next,Next,Next and pidgin would be install automatically.

Strep 3) Configuration: now Launch Pidgin. you will be greeted with Account Dialog Box click on “Add Account” to a facebook account

Step 4) Now in Add Account Screen, enter the following & leave rest to default:

protocol: XMPP

username: your facebook username . Its the same which you get in step-1

Domain: chat.facebook.com

password: <enter your facebook password>

Check Remember Password

Step 5) In the Advanced Tab, Do the following

Uncheck “Require SSL/TLS“

Check “Allow plaintext auth over unencrypted streams“

Connect port: 5222

Connect Server: chat.facebook.com

Step 6) Click on Save and wait for few seconds while pidgin connects to facebook. If you have configured the settings correctly then you should be able to see this:

Congrats! you can start chatting with your friends rightway

Bonus Tip:Pidgin supports multiple protocols. so you can also add your GTalk,Yahoo Messenger or MSN accounts same way you added your Facebook account and chat on all of them at the same time. no need to install separate client program for each protocols. Great Nice eh?

The main points given in circular are:-

Every internet user in country has to register his wireless equipment with his ISP. All ISPs make sure that this rules is duly followed.

The Subscriber is fully responsible if any kind of illegal/anti social activities made through his Internet connection.

For Existing Subscribers, ISP would inform them about this directive and give a notice for compliance. if a subscriber does not follow, his connection would be suspended until he registers.

This move is implemented because of security concerns of repeated unauthorized usage by terror groups. But what surprises me is that there is no mention of creating awareness about wireless security encryption in whole circular.what really needed is banning open networks and encourage usage of stronger wireless encryption standards like WPA2 which cannot be easily defeated. if you have Wi-Fi network, i strongly appeal you to make it secure by using encryption – Read How to Secure your Wi-Fi networks.

Even if the Govt manages to create a database of all wireless internet subscribers in Country. If is going to stop terrorist from using Wi-Fi networks? The answer is sadly “NO”. Instead this move would be a hassle for all ISPs and their customers. Also the person from whom the mail had been sent would land into trouble for sheer ignorance.

Anyways, as this a Govt directive – everyone has to follow it. ISPs have already started informing their subscribers. Tata Broadband recently send an E-mail informing to all their subscribers . expect other ISPs like Bsnl,Airtel to follow.

what we really need to do is to educate people about risks of open Wireless networks and press them to use wireless encryption.

What your take on Wi-Fi security concerns and its usage in terror attacks?

As we all know – Internet these days can be bread earner. many people use need-age methods to make money online. these methods don’t require us to go to an office daily, instead we can work from home. Everyday people make millions and millions of real money by working on internet and allied services. how cool is that sound, sitting at home and earning millions!

But wait there isn’t much difference between making money online or offline as money needs to earned by making efforts and taking some risks. So you have to make smart decisions while evaluating your own pros and cons. so, if you are a 13yr old teenager who wants to make some quick cash online by doing nothing, then you shouldn’t be reading this.

Here I would share a few trusted methods which are known to make money.these are not like scam/survey sites which never pay! maybe it would take a while longer for you to earn your first payout but surely you will earn a lot in longer term. rest assured these methods are 100% correct;both legally & morally. It does not require you to steal or hack.

okay, enough of mumbo-jumbo, lets see what these methods are:

Advertising networks like Adsense:

It is the most popular method till date by which thousand of people make money.Adsense and others work on principle of Cost-per-click(CPC) which means whenever a visitor clicks on ads appearing on your page, you get paid on per click basis.the more clicks your site generate they more money you earn.there is no limit on how much you can earn. For your encouragement, I have seen people pulling $10,000USD(about 5lakh in Indian rupees) a day, so sky is the limit. how much you earn depends on two factors. First, you should have original and unique content.

Second, traffic – more you get merrier it is.But remember traffic highly depends on content, so always try to produce original & unique content. is If you have a blog or website which generates decent traffic Adsense should be best option for you. if you don’t your own website/blog don’t feel bad – Read on….

Domaining

Domaining is the business of buying, selling, developing and monetizing Internet domain names. In simply language you look for look for strong commercial keywords domains and develop them into websites for purpose of making money.now what would be strong commercial keywords? Simple, The common terms for which people search everyday like creditcard.com,sex.com,buy.com but wait aren’t all these registered already? yes they are but there are tons of others waiting to be discovered by you. My suggestion if you look into country code extensions like .IN,.CO.UK as gTLD market(.COM,.NET,.ORG) is currently saturated. ccTLDs are the future! To succeed in this business you need little smartness and lots of luck!Best thing you about this method is you don’t need have to invest lots of money – one could start small. domain registration rates are start $8USD(Rs.450) depending upon on extension.

One thing most people do is confuse Cyber squatting with Domaining. Both are completely different; the main differences are: Domaininers always avoid Trademarks and develop sites whereas cyber squatters simply register Trademark/copyrighted names with no intention of development.

If you want start of as a Domainer refer to Guide How to Get Started as a Domainer

Affiliate marketing

Affiliate Marketing is another term for Cost Per Action(CPA) Advertising. This is a form of advertising where the advertiser pays based on specified actions taken by the end user. Some examples would be filling out a form after clicking on the ad or purchasing a product after clicking on the ad.

Simply put,you have promote good and services of others and when users buys it based on your referral you get a commission. to get started with Affiliate you first need to sign up with a affiliate program, the one most recommended for starters is Commission Junction.

Market your Product/Services
