What is Evdo Data Card?
In Simple terms, EvDo is a Technology which works on CDMA networks and it provides high speed Internet access on Mobile. it can also be termed as Mobile Broadband since you don’t have stick at one place, you can move freely move and still be able to check your e-mail as long as you are in coverage area. Just like you do with GRPS service with your mobile phone. A much more, technically correct definition is given below:-
Evolution-Data Optimized(Evdo) is a telecommunications standard for the wireless transmission of data through radio signals, typically for broadband Internet access. It is based on CDMA Technology.The EV-DO feature of CDMA2000 networks provides access to mobile devices with forward link air interface speeds of up to 2.4 Mbit/s with Rev. 0 and up to 3.1 Mbit/s with Rev. A.

BSNL EVDO is an unlimited bandwidth service, which means you can use as much as you want, there are no data limits on the service. you just have to pay the monthly rental of Rs.650/-. its Truly Unlimited service, no extra costs
Do I need any special Device to use this service?
You can need EVDO wireless usb modem/card. Bsnl currently gives EV-DO card AC8700 by ZTE Mobile Tech.This device stylish device plug directly in USB port of your computer/laptop.It Weights about 40g.The device costs 3,500 Rs.(May vary +/- few Rs in few regions). When i went to bsnl office for enquiry of the service, i was given a Tariff card. the same has been upload for your kind reference. I got this card from BSNL jaipur, so Charges maybe slightly different for different states.

How do I get the BSNL EVDO service?
You need to visit the main BSNL office in your area to get EVDO connection.In Jaipur,Rajasthan. I went to Bajaj Nagar Telephone Exchange but before you get your own connection, please ask them for a demonstration. Also, ask them but the coverage details & what likely speeds would get in your area.
What is CDMA 1x ?
CDMA 1x is the previous version or the older version of EVDO which has speed upto 144kbps. As EvDO is still in Nascent stage of deployment very few areas have Evdo BTS (base transmitting stations), rest are still CDMA 1x. If BTS near you is not Evdo enabled then you will get CDMA 1x speeds of upto144kbps.
What about the speeds & performance?
Speeds & Performance depend on Signal Strength which varies place to place . some people have reported to get about 1.5mbps speed and some only get around 100kbps only. so i would suggest you to contact your nearest local exchange and ask for a live demo. here is a brief account of my personnel experience.
- With about 4Signal bars; speeds were around 200-600kbps range. placing the device at specific positions helps in signal reception.
- Speed was constantly fluctuating & were not stable; however average speeds of 300kbps were observed over the period of 2hours.
- Websites like orkut,yahoo,rediff loaded speedily but video playback on youtube was not smooth due to constant fluctuations of bandwidth availability.
Troubleshooting EvDo Connectivity
ZTE Device comes with LED light which shows us status of Internet connectivity. it has 2 colors & various states which inform us about the current network. Additionally, top bar of bundled ZTE application provides a lot of useful information on current connection state. For a Smooth working Connection, you have have minimum 3 signal bars, else would face connectivity problems.
Special Note for torrent & Rapidshare Users; Others can skip this
In Bsnl EvDO you aren’t directly connected to Internet.instead you are connected to a Proxy server on bsnl’s network which has a private IP, in 10.xx.xx.xx range. that proxy server then connects to Internet Gateway aka National Internet Backbone. so as a result, proxy server blocks all incoming connections to it, except those coming from known ports like port 80,443 etc.Every Proxy server has a unique Public IP address, and all subscribers connected to it will share that Public IP address. Its entirely different from convention when every Subscriber has unique Public Ip address
This Approach was two shortcomings:
- Rapidshare: As a single public IP address is shared among lot of users, there is a great chance at someone from your IP address would have already download from Rapidshare. so now for next 30days you can’t download from that same IP, as its a limitation imposed by rapidshare on free users. however premium account holder
won’t be affected due to this. - Torrents:Currently BSNL has set the proxy in such a way that it blocks all incoming connections other than of known ports like port 80,443 etc. as a result you aren’t connectable to other users. you can only download a torrent and can’t upload. on private trackers you would be banned shortly for a bad ratio and on public trackers you would get slow speeds
Pros
- Fast, cheap & portable
- Unlimited Usage
- Unique, presently this is only Evdo service in INDIA, rest operators have networks which are many times slower. dsadadother operators have started similar services namly tata photon,reliance netconnect plus but none of them is unlimited. Even Unlimited Plans have data limits under Fair Usage Policy. so if you want Truly unlimited Internet access on the move at affordable prices, Bsnl Evdo is your best bet.
Cons
- Constant fluctuations of speed which depends on signal
- No All india Roaming; you can roam in your state only Now Available: National Roaming is Now available on BSNL Data Card
- Limited Coverage: Evdo network is under deployment, it is available in selected cities only. other area will get speeds upto 144kbps(CDMA 1x)
Conclusion
Bsnl Evdo is good service with gives excellent speeds on the move comparing to other alternatives like GPRS. The technology involved is quite new in India, this can be judged from the fact the DOT has not issued any format licenses for 3G CDMA. when licenses are issues we would expect similar roll outs from other operators also.
I would recommend people to try this service atleast once, if they find it suitable they should subscribe to it

BSNL has not implemented Voice or SMS facility in Evdo data card as bsnl is advertising it as Internet access device.however technically support for Voice & SMS exists in ZTE AC8700.
This facility is available in NIC CDMA 1X which has speed upto 144kbps

I have BSNL-EVDO 2.4 Mbps Conn. from three months.Though it shows full signal strength,I never get a download speed greater than 50-100kbps.What should I do to increase my download speed??I have read that some BSNL-EVDO users get speed upto 300-400Kbps.Is it true??

It depends on various factors like distance from tower, server load,signal strength.
At my Home,I never got speeds above 700kbps, whereas while travling around the city i used to get about 1.1mbps
that why i always recommend, people to take a demo of the service before buying:)

hey ya i did check the link earlier but when i plug in my datacard after doing the procedure it doesnt detect it as it was supposed to so now i dont know what else to do. I also wrote to author but there was no response.

I had installed this on my friends macbook, a while back without any problem. currently I don’t have any machine with OS X installed. so can’t help with specific instructions.
If the card is not detected, then
*Verify that USB module’s version no is same as kernel, if there is a conflict then; none of the USB devices would work. so try plugging in any other USB device like a USB mouse to see if USB works.
*Try Alternative USB port, if installing with help of extension cable provided in package. try plugging directly

No, It has different IP Range which is assigned to Every cities WLL network.
Each city has 5-6IP address which are shared among users via NAT

BSNL hasn’t enabled National Roaming yet. but roaming facility should be available at State level. I have never took my device outside jaipur, so i can’t confirm this. better ask this Commercial Officer in Bsnl exchange.

Yes, Sir. it is available there!
* On Torrents you are not connectible, meaning that you can’t can’t upload anything. still you can download but as you aren’t seeding anything, on Public trackers you won’t get full speeds. Private trackers would ban you for low ratio.
*State roaming is available, but National Roaming is not yet enabled

Can this EVDO connection be shared, i mean i have 2 more systems on LAN can i share EVDO network with them using switch like i can do in ADSL connection. Yes, but for you can you need 3G routers which are not available in india Yet. the workaround is to install a proxy on the pc and share net via LAN

nice & useful info. keep it up. i am using Tata Indicom photon. speed is good reaches upto 1000 kbps, sometimes 2000 kbps). it uses the same EVDO card as Bsnl, so does Reliance netconnect. seems all these companies are buying the same model from the same vendor ie Qualcomm. i want to migrate to Bsnl Evdo service(bec of lower rates). can i use the same Evdo card i am using now provided by Tata?

I have a BSNL EVDO wareless data terminal card.I have a problem that, my Internet speed is very slow. Its maximum speed is 110kbps and its upload & download speed run between 11kbps to 45 kbps. I live in Durgapur,Rajhbandh and my nearest towre is in panagarh which is just far only 8km from Rajhbandh. MY network coverage also not so good, only two tower are show in EVDO screen. sir i just want to know how i increase my internet speed?…please help me and please solve my problem.

8km distance is not nearby. for good speeds tower should be with 3-5km range.

i am from bangalore south, i consistently get download speeds from 120 kB/s to 150kB/s, ie around 1100kb/s to 1400kb/s.
initially i used to get around 40-60 KB/s but since 2mths i am getting good speed.
also one thing get to know where the tower is and place the system near the window in that direction, u will see a dramatic change

Hi,
Although both use same device but transfer is not possible. its just like you can’t use a TATA CDMA mobile with Reliance CDMA. altough both are technically compatible. Still there is no harm in asking Reliance reps about this. just take your device and show it to them.
If they don’t agree then you might have to sale your current one and buy a new from reliance.And, I don’t know about 3G SIM module.

Buyers are always there, we just need to reach them. the product is solid as you get unlimited internet with speeds upto 2.4mbps for just 500bucks.
you got two options:
1) Return it to BSNL itself. they may take it back.
2) Sell it online to places like Ebay or some broadband forum like this India Broadband Forum – Buy & Sell. lot people are interested to buy this .
If you choose Option 2 then you might can you get on rules for connection transfer.
